As a mum myself, I love photographing children of all ages. Their unpredictability can often be challenging but I find it so rewarding and exciting capturing the different stages of them growing up. Children change so quickly and, for me, there’s nothing nicer than looking back on old photographs and seeing how much they have changed. When you spend every day with your children you kind of think they look the same but are just growing taller. It’s only when you look back on photos from a couple of years ago that you notice the difference in them is more than them growing taller … they’re growing up! The feeling I get from looking at photos is quite magical and why I love photographing children.
What is a lifestyle portrait session?
These takes place outside at a location of your choice within the Nottingham and Derby area, e.g. Wollaton Park, Rufford Park or Clumber Park. If there is a special place where you like to take your children, your lifestyle portraits could take place there. I’m always open to suggestions and constantly on the look out for new places to go.
These sessions can also take place at your home if you would like some photos of you and your children playing in your garden or just generally doing the things you love at home.
What’s the difference between a lifestyle session and studio session?
Lifestyle portrait sessions are an informal and a relaxed way of capturing children and families. They are great for children who want to roam a little and explore the great outdoors whilst allowing me to capture natural and fun expressions.
Photographing outdoors using natural light gives everyone the freedom to move around without being restricted by the set-up of a studio which works really well when photographing children as they are not confined to one spot. I find that people of all ages are instantly more relaxed in an outdoor environment which ultimately shows in the photos. For more information on studio sessions, please click here. You can also have a look through my studio portfolio and lifestyle portfolio to see which style you prefer.
How long does a lifestyle portrait session last?
This can vary depending on the number of children being photographed and where we go but I generally say about 1-1.5 hours.
Can parents be included in the photo session?
Absolutely! As someone who is always (happily) behind the camera rather than in front of the camera, I do value the photos I have with my son and family. Whilst the main focus of photo sessions is usually on your children, think about having a few family photos too.
Why I love lifestyle portraits
Lifestyle portraits are where I started my own journey into photography. My son was around 6 months old when I decided to start training in photography. I was constantly experimenting with techniques and visiting different locations.
I love combining natural light and the surrounding environment to create artistic portraits making photos even more special!
What happens if it rains on the day of the session?
We have a couple of options. If it’s light rain and and your child is happy playing in puddles, your photo session can still go ahead if you wish.
If that doesn’t appeal or it’s heavy rain, we can either re-schedule for another date or you can have a studio session.
